Leopards are graceful medium sized big cat that is found in sub-saharan Africa, northeast Africa, central Asia, China and India.


History of leopard at Patna zoo started in the year 1986 when two wild captured female leopards named Rangeeta and Tara were received from Hazaribagh Forest Division. In the year 1997 one more female wild leopard named Reena received from Shahabad Forest Division. After that some more wild as well as captive leopards were received. In the year 1990, a male leopard (Maan Singh) was received from Delhi Zoo which lead to start of conservation breeding of leopard at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna and first time two female leopard cubs (Asha and Nisha) were born in the year 2002 from Maan Singh and Reena. Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park received two wild captured leopard, one male (Raja) and one female (Rani), who were brought in the year 2012 from Guwahati Zoo. At present patna zoo has three male and two female leopards.
Average age - 12-17 years.

  • Conservation Status: Vulnerable
  • Leopards are renowned for their agility. They run up to 58 km/h and can leap 6 meters horizontally and 3 meters vertically. They are also very strong swimmers.
  • There are also black leopards, too, whose rosettes are hard to see because their fur is so dark.
  • Males and females vary in weight. Females typically weigh 30 to 55 kilograms and males usually weigh around 40 to 75 kg.
  • Leopards have a gestation period of approximately 3 months and typically give birth to a litter of 2 to 3 cubs.
  • The lifespan of a leopard is between 12 and 17 years in the wild, and up to 23 years in captivity.

  • तेंदुए अपनी फुर्ती के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं। वे 58 किमी/ घंटा तक दौड़ सकते हैं और 6 मीटर समस्तरीय और 3 मीटर ऊँची छलांग लगा सकते हैं। वे मजबूत तैराक भी होते हैं।
  • काले तेंदुए भी होते हैं, जिनके रोसेट देखने में कठिन होते हैं क्योंकि उनका फर इतना गहरे रंग का होता है।
  • नर और मादा वजन में भिन्न होते हैं। मादाओं का वजन आमतौर पर 30 से 55 किलोग्राम और नरों का 40 से 75 किलोग्राम होता है।
  • तेंदुओं की गर्भधारण अवधि लगभग 3 महीने होती है और आमतौर पर 2 से 3 शावकों को जन्म देते हैं।
  • एक तेंदुए का जीवनकाल जंगल में 12 से 17 साल और कैद में 23 साल तक होता है।
