Giraffe

जिराफ़

Giraffe is the tallest living terrestrial animal having an average height of around 5 meters and it is the largest ruminant. Giraffes live primarily in Savannahs areas in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna has breeding captive population of Giraffe. In the year 2006, Patna Zoo received 01 male (Vikas) and 02 female (Shanti and Shrishti) from San Diego Zoo, U.S.A. under animal exchange programme. One female Giraffe was born in 2011 from Vikas and Shanti and she was finally transferred to Nandankanan Zoo in the year 2012. Male (Vikas) was died on 23.10.2012, so Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park managed to receive one male Giraffe (Bhima) from Mysore Zoo in 2014 under animal exchange. At present Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna has one male (Bhima) and four female (Shanti, Shristi and two calf) Giraffe.

Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Their legs alone are taller than many humans—about 6 feet.
Giraffes only need to drink once every few days.
Both male and female giraffes have two distinct hair-covered horns.
Male giraffes use their horns to sometimes fight with other males.
Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period! They often achieve that in quick naps that may last only a minute or two at times.
In the wild these beautiful creatures live for around 25 years. In captivity they live longer, and have been known to reach 40 years old.

अकेले उनके पैर ही कई मनुष्यों से लम्बे होते हैं - लगभग 6 फीट।
जिराफ़ को केवल हर कुछ दिनों में एक बार पानी पीने की आवश्यकता होती है।
नर और मादा जिराफ़ दोनों के दो अलग-अलग बाल से ढके हुए सींग होते हैं।
नर जिराफ़ कभी-कभी अन्य नरों से लड़ने के लिए अपने सींग का उपयोग करते हैं।
जिराफ़ को 24 घंटे की अवधि में केवल 5 से 30 मिनट की नींद की आवश्यकता होती है! वे अक्सर उसे एक से दो मिनट की त्वरित झपकी में ही प्राप्त कर लेते हैं।
जंगल में ये खूबसूरत जीव लगभग 25 साल तक रहते हैं। कैद में वे लंबे समय तक रहते हैं, और 40 साल की उम्र तक पहुंचने के लिए जाने जाते हैं।
